Week Notes - 2026-08
This week I managed to successfully continue my Step Challenge which I started a few weeks ago. My daily average steps since I started is 7772 per day as of this evening.
Even with a few wobbles, this week once again proves it's all about just "getting up, and going for a walk". Sometimes, that quite a long walk...
I am feeling much better after two weeks of actively trying to move more. I can't to see how I feel in a few more weeks. I'm also starting to sort out my eating habits by getting back on the Huel train. I know people say it's not real food, but it's all about simplifying choices. If I am in the office, and I have a Huel mac and cheese in my bag, I (hopefully) won't go out to buy a meal deal or takeaway for lunch. That means I have a balanced 400kcal mean instead of a crap sandwich, and a bag of crisps.
Reading π
I continued reading "Eye of the Bedlam Bride". It is the best Dungeon Crawler Carl book I've read so far, and I was late to bed last night because I couldn't put it down.
Gaming π²
My Four in February challenge isn't looking great. I played a little bit of Katamari Damacy REROLL a few night ago and realised I don't really get the twin stick controls. They just seem to make things harder than they need to be? I wish I could enable normal camera controls! With that in I'll be keeping to playing Dragon Quest II this week. I don't think I'll beat it by the 28th, but I'll have a good go at it.
This weekend, a uni friend of ours came to visit and we had a nice chat up whilst getting a few board games to the table - we played a few rounds of Ecosystem plus the Coral Reef variant. He managed to discover a winning strategy on his first game, which I believe is "hoard all of the grouper & plankton cards". I think it got him about 120 points!
We also finally got to play Worms the Board Game! I've been waiting for an opportunity since Christmas to play this, and it did not dissapoint. The game is fast paced, chaotic and full of fun. If you like the Worms video games, you'll enjoy the Worms board game. It did take us a game or two to fully grok the mechanics, but once it clicked we were blowing each other up, and smacking each others worms in the face with baseball bats just like the old days.
Making Good Habits
I was looking at getting a Brick to help cut down with screen-time, but I found Foqos instead. Foqos is a free, open source app that requires absolutely no accounts, and does everything Brick does (without the Β£60 price tag.)
Once it's setup (and you've chosen either which apps to allow or block), you have to scan a QR code or NFC tag (the cheap stickers I bought on ebay work fine) to turn off the "focus mode". I've placed a sticker at the top of my stairs which means if I want to disable it, I'll have to get up and walk around.
I've set it up to limit my phone when I'm physically in the office, as well as after 9pm. It'll be interesting to see how it goes. I'm hoping I see a increase in reading time, and a decrease in screen time.
